Analysis of major antioxidants from extracts of Myrmecodia pendans by UV/visible spectrophotometer, liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, and high-performance liquid chromatography/UV techniques

Abstract: In the present work, heat reflux extraction with ethanol/water (80:20; v/v) as the solvent was used to extract antioxidants from Myrmecodia pendans. The crude extract (CE) was fractionated using hexane and ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) and aqueous fraction were collected. Antioxidant activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl-radical radical and ferric reducing power of the CE, EAF, and aqueous fraction were evaluated. EAF showed comparable antioxidant activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhy… Show more

“…The polyphenols present in SCG are an group of secondary metabolites of plants, which are the constituents of a great number of fruit and vegetables, and beverages such as tea, coffee and wine and the main antioxidants in the human diet [13]. Caffeic acid is a well-known non-flavonoid phenolic compound abundant in coffee, presenting potent antioxidant and neuroprotective properties [14].…”

“…Modern techniques that consisted of UV/visible, liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry and HPLC were employed for identifying the antioxidative compounds in the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of M. pendan. Three phenolics (rosmarinic acid, procyanidin B1, and polymer of procyanidin B1) were identified (Engida et al 2014). In addition, the EtOAc extract from M. platytyrea tuber revealed its potency in the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) modified method (EC 50 = 32.91 ± 2.23 µg/mL) (Mohamad Haris, 2014).…”

“…7,3′,5′-trihydroxyflavanone). In order to investigate the chemical compositions, the ant plants were subjected to extraction techniques (Engida et al 2014). Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction was utilized for extracting polyphenols such as gallic acid, catechin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, quercetin, luteolin and kaempferol in the M. pendans (Sanjaya et al 2014).…”

“…Qualitative test on sarang semut extracts revealed the presence of polyphenols, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, tocopherols, and a variety of essential minerals, but only a few specific compounds were identified [8][9]. Bioactive compounds identified in the ethanol and supercritical CO2 extracts of sarang semut were mostly phenolic compounds (kaempferol, luteoline, rutine, quercetin, apigenin, gallic acid, catechin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, rosmarinic acid and procyanidin B1) [10][11][12]. Due to the limited reports on the isolation and identification of constituents in sarang semut extract, the objective of this study is to separate and identify phytochemical constituents of the water extract using HPLC-MS. Forty-eight antioxidant compounds are tentatively identified and 37 among them are reported for the first time in this plant.…”
