Analysis of life expectancy across countries using a decision tree

Abstract: Background: It is important to identify variables that influence life expectancy in order to develop strategies to improve health care systems and thereby increase life expectancy. Aims: In this study, a decision tree was built using a chi-square automatic interaction detector technique in order to identify variables influencing life expectancy at birth. Methods: Data were taken from the databases of the World Bank, World Health Organization and World Life Expectancy. Data from 166 countries for the year 2013 … Show more

“…Decision Trees [37][38][39] are one of the most powerful algorithmic approaches currently used in the vast majority of Machine Learning research fields, especially in the fields of healthcare and data mining or data science, which search for different behaviors that can define efficient and more accurate sets of patterns, that are applicable to the general population.…”

“…Life expectancies in Korea are now approaching the upper tier globally, although there are gender differences between men and women. According to a study published by Karacan et al (2019), women in South Korea are projected to be first globally to have an average life expectancy in excess of 90, with a 57% confidence rate of this happening by 2030. This information, along with the low TFR, will mean that the overall number and proportion of older people in Korea will increase, but the overall population of the country will also eventually start to decline, and this decline will accelerate quickly (Jones, 2019).…”

“…Life expectancy (LE) at birth is a well-established indicator of the overall health of a population [4,5]. LE reflects the cumulative effect of biological, behavioural and environmental determinants of health, including working and living conditions, exposure to pollution, access to health care, education, income, and social support [6].…”
