Analysis of leaks from geomembrane in a sanitary landfill through models of electrical resistivity tomography in South Brazil

Abstract: Landfills are the main destination of solid waste generated in Brazil. Based on technical criteria, the construction of a landfill aims to minimize environmental impacts since it can present problems of high complexity. This paper discusses the use of electric resistivity tomography applied in a waste cell of a landfill, and its objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of such tool in the detection of possible leachate's leakage points in the landfill's geomembrane. The leachate is a liquid effluent characte… Show more

“…Subsequently, the generation of 3D visualization models was made through the use of Oasis Montaj Platform (Geosoft), whose process of interpolation of the previous 2D geophysical products is based on the methods of kriging and minimum curvature, designed to guarantee the smoothing of the central values concerning the limits of the investigated area. The use of this kind of model, frequently applied in mineral prospection researches [62][63][64], makes possible a broad analysis of the hydrogeological conditions of the study area, including the identification of preferential groundwater pathways in the context of fractured and porous aquifer systems and delimitation of contamination plumes during the stages of characterization and monitoring of impacted sites [65][66][67].…”

“…The 3D visualization models generated from geophysical data are great to help understanding complex geological structures and hydrological problems, like the pollutants flow and modeling ore deposits (Chambers et al, 2006;Aizebeokhai et al, 2011;Moreira et al, 2016;Moreira et al, 2018).…”

“…2.4 Research method Different technologies have been developed and applied in landfills to evaluate possible soil contamination owing to faults in the waterproofing system of its base (Moreira et al, 2018;Shu et al, 2018) or to evaluate the levels of contamination of the soil and groundwater, owing to percolation of the leachate in landfills without waterproofing (Xie et al, 2016;Akpan et al, 2018;Przydatek and Kanownik, 2019). Several tools and methods are needed to conduct each research, in this section the materials, methods and tools used, are briefly described.…”
