Analysis of laboratory critical values at a referral Spanish tertiary university hospital

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of this study was to analyse critical value data from our laboratory and compare our critical value reporting policy with others in the literature.Materials and methodsAnalysis of critical values was performed on data obtained over a 6-month period in a tertiary university hospital.ResultsWe identified 5723 critical values, of which approximately 80% came from STAT testing (4577), 15% from routine inpatients testing (884) and 5% from routine outpatients testing (262). The highest proportion… Show more

“…Evaluation of the communication system for critical risk result notification in our laboratory shows that the total number of notifications meet the international recommendations, although lower than the 0.4% obtained in the study performed by Arbiol and colleagues ( 12 , 19 ). This could be due to the fact that blood gas point-of-care testing analysers are distributed throughout our hospital (ER, intensive care unit, obstetrics unit, etc.…”

“…[1][2][3] Critical values are very life-threatening high or low measurements in laboratory tests and should be reported promptly to the health care providers in order to develop better diagnostic and prognostic approaches and results by helping the personnel adopt better courses of action in patient treatment. [4][5][6][7][8] Labs should inform patients and physicians of critical values so as to facilitate decision making as emphasized by the Joint Commission 5 and College of American Pathologists. 9,10 The methods used for determination of critical values are not the same across the countries and ethnic groups; these measurements should be determined separately in various regions, 5,11 and periodical updates should be developed to improve the quality of the results.…”

“…Even the lower and upper limits for glucose in newborns and children are different, and so are the glucose limits in adults. However, in studies by Sarita et al, Dighe et al, And Abriol-Roca et al, they did not differentiate the limits [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Meanwhile, in pediatric patients, the frequency varied from 4.55% for PT, INR, and albumin to 31.82% for total bilirubin. Overall without any classifications, creatinine, urea, and glucose are the three parameters that have the highest frequency [7][8][9][10].…”
