Analysis of Internal Solitary Waves in the Gulf of Oman and Sources Responsible for Their Generation

Abstract: A combination of multiple data sources has been used to study the characteristics of internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the Gulf of Oman (GoO). Water column stratification in the Gulf has been examined using field observations and World Ocean Atlas 2018 datasets. The spatiotemporal distribution of ISWs has been obtained from satellite images obtained by means of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and optical sensors taken from 2018 to 2020. The mechanisms of ISW generation in the GoO have been studied using the dat… Show more

“…Moreover, internal waves can also be generated under the effect of wind. Wind-generated internal waves have been widely studied and it has been demonstrated that the divergence and convergence of wind velocity, as well as time-space-varying wind field, can excite baroclinic instabilities [12][13][14]), as cited by Koohestani et al [15].…”

“…It should be noted that there are quite a large number of papers on monitoring sea level changes near coasts in different areas of the World Ocean, for example, [Pérez Gómez et al, 2022;Valentim et al, 2013;Williams, 2013] but the observations obtained from these studies are used to analyze coastal erosion or to monitoring sea level changes associated with climate change and possible coastal flooding. In the recent paper [Koohestani et al, 2023] the authors analyzed the appearance of internal solitary waves in the Bay of Oman caused different mechanisms including variations of atmospheric pressure, wind, currents, etc. Note also two more publications that relate to the study of long-term changes in sea level and the identification of a trend in rising sea levels [Goryachkin et al, 1999;Raj et al, 2022].…”

“…Zhang et al [29] revealed a cascade process from ISWs to turbulent mixing via high-frequency internal waves near the maximum local buoyancy frequency in the deep water of the northern South China Sea by high-resolution mooring observations. Koohestani et al [30] used a combination of multiple data sources to study the characteristics of ISWs in the Gulf of Oman. Beyond that, due to the complex islands and rough topography, the outflow of the Indonesian Transport Flow (ITF) is a hotspot for ISWs.…”
