Analysis of Instrumental Practices in Collaborative Design: Method of Identifying Needs, Means and Their Effectiveness

Abstract: This paper presents a user-centered data collection method, concerning "means of design" and "representation supports" implemented in a collective architectural design process. Our aim is to study how these observed means and representations are adapted to agile design methods. Our methodapplied on several long (3 months) architectural design processesallows us to identify patterns of use and to consider their efficiency level brought to designers.

“…The types of expected information are taken from the specific and precise definition of LODs by the American Institute of Architects and taken up by the Belgian CSTC [13]. At the end of the Design Concept phase, the following elements should be represented with a LOD of 200: -Spaces The classification of representation used comes from a previously developed classification [18] identifying seven types of information representations:…”

“…The analysis of these design episodes is done by 15-second steps. We characterize the evolution of the information through a free description as well as through four criteria (developed in previous publications [23], [13]):…”

“…There are several categories of representations, that play different roles in our perception of architectural information. To conduct this experiment, we choose to apply two of the seven existing ones (Baudoux et al, 2019): 2D plans and sections: this is the usual basic support in design, they are still today the most mobilized elements to support reflection and communication; and 3D immersion: this support allows the use of an AR application in analogy with the physical model, another usual support in design, and will be compared to our basic support. These two methods are thus integrated into 3 types of project review: an analysis using 2D plans and sections, an analysis using a 3D model in augmented reality and finally an analysis using both of the above methods.…”
