“…This is supported by our observation that PC-sIL-6R protein was detected at higher levels in sera of HAM/TSP patients (Fig. 4b) in which Tax-positive cells were present in peripheral blood 43 compared with sera of healthy people or ATL patients, who are known to barely contain them. These results indicate that Tax enhances production of PCsIL-6R in HTLV-I-infected T cells.…”

“…A patient with HAM/TSP develops a progressive spastic weakness of the legs, often accompanied by low back pain and urinary frequency or urgency (Gessain & Gout 1992;Nakagawa et al 1995). The disease typically progresses for several months, leaving the patient bedbound, chair-bound, or walking with sticks.…”

“…females is 1:2. The peak age at onset of HAM/TSP is in the 40s, but the disease can present at almost any age; it is rare in children (Nakagawa et al 1995).…”

“…A chronic in£ammatory disease of the central nervous system, namely HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), is strongly associated with a high HTLV-1 proviral load (Nagai et al 1998). We have observed a signi¢cant positive correlation in healthy HTLV-1 carriers between the proviral load of HTLV-1 and the frequency of CTLs speci¢c to an immunodominant A * 02-restricted epitope in Tax, Tax11-19, as measured with £uorescent-labelled tetrameric complexes of HLA-A * 02/b-2 microglobulin/Tax 11-19 peptide (¢gure 1a).…”
