“…In parallel with quantification of SCI, documenting the effect of reduced arterial oxygen content secondary to anemia and hypoxia on cerebral blood flow ( 65 ) and oxygen extraction fraction ( 73 ), may shed light on the etiology of cognitive difficulties in SCA, alongside connectivity studies ( 74 ). In addition, regional brain volumes may be reduced in SCA ( 75 , 76 ); we did not find an effect of total intracranial volume in our regressions but further regional analyses are planned.…”

“…Six studies examined total subcortical volumes, while one study evaluated hippocampal subfields at 7T in patients with SCA and controls [ 29 ]. Subcortical volume reduction was noted only in 2/5 studies in SCA children and was not associated with cognitive outcomes in any of the five.…”

“…The block-matching 4D (BM4D) denoising algorithm ( Maggioni et al, 2013 ) could then be applied and the denoised image is obtained after the inverse VST. This tool has been used for other MRI applications ( Santini et al, 2021a ) and yields a good result when applied to EPI data. Distortion correction was performed using the estimated B 0 maps derived from the spin-echo sequence using the topup tool ( Andersson et al, 2003 ) from FSL software package.…”
