Analysis of Heavy Metal Contaminants and Mobility in Sewage sludge-soil Mixtures for Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Agata Janaszek,
Robert Kowalik

Abstract: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of the potential utilization of sewage sludge in agriculture, focusing on the assessment of heavy metal contaminants and their mobility in sewage sludge-soil mixtures. The innovative approach of investigating heavy metal fractions in these mixtures sheds light on their environmental implications. In this study, sludge and soil samples from three different soil categories were collected, and the mobility of heavy metals was investigated using sequential BCR analysis.… Show more

“…The toxicity of heavy metals depends on their form of mobility according to their tendency for migration into substrates. Heavy metals in mixtures of sludge-soil-as in Moldova Noua waste heaps-showed lower mobility compared to soil matrices, but a similar level of concentration [35]. An important role in the mobility of heavy metals in soil is played by the pH of the soil.…”

“…This inadequacy stems from the ability of heavy metals to migrate between soil layers, potentially infiltrating groundwater and surface water, posing contamination risks to plants, and potentially harming humans [10][11][12]. The mobility of heavy metals predominantly hinges on their chemical composition within the environment [13].…”

“…The need for efficient use of energy, its recuperation and production from renewable energy sources requires the application of effective heat exchangers (Dudkiewicz et al 2022, Holubčík et al 2024, Voznyak et al 2023. They are needed in all technological devices, ranging from small to large scale ones, and in all areas of everyday engineering -from sewage treatment plants (Janaszek & Kowalik 2023, Janaszek et al 2024 to nuclear power plants. A typical feature of improved design is proper surface modification, which might extend the heat transfer area (Wojtkowiak et al 2019, Wojtkowiak & Amanowicz 2020.…”
