Analysis of Gunshot Primer Residue Collection Swabs Using Flameless Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry: A Reexamination of Extraction and Instrument Procedures

Abstract: Methods of extraction of gunshot residue (GSR) swabs for determination of antimony (Sb), barium (Ba), and lead (Pb) by flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS) have been studied. Optimum extraction parameters were determined using recovery studies of Sb, Ba, and Pb added to swabs at amounts representative of actual GSR and handblank levels. Two difficulties with most extraction-AAS procedures are incomplete extraction of Sb and incorrect Ba results arising from improper matching of sample and standa… Show more

“…Based on the distance to the different centroid of groups, ashes Tz-443, Tz-444, Tz-445, and Tz-447 can be assigned to group A, while ash HPC611 can be assigned to group C (Table 2. This result also confirmed the previous study that none of the clays can be grouped with pottery directly [4]. Si, 31 P, 33 S, 35 Cl, 39 K, 44 Ca, 57 Fe, 60 Ni, 63 Cu, 66 Zn, and 118 Sn) using scanning LA-ICP-MS [72].…”

“…Data analysis and organization were performed by importing the calculated concentration data into Microsoft Excel â and converting to actual micrograms of the element per swab by back-calculation of the dilutions. Cutoff values derived from the literature (1,7) and based on our own experiments for positive determinations were set at 0.04 lg of antimony and 0.10 lg or more of barium and lead. Table 1 shows the determinations of the instrumental minimum limit of detection and of quantitation.…”
