Background Port catheter placement is usually an operation performed under local anesthesia. Being conscious during the interventions performed with local anesthesia can lead to anxiety and stress. Objective The aim of this study was to determine the effect of guided imagery performed before and during the procedure on vital signs and comfort, pain, anxiety, and satisfaction levels in patients with cancer undergoing port catheterization with local anesthesia. Methods A total of 80 patients were included in the study. Patients in the intervention group received standard treatment and nursing care, as well as a guided imagery intervention once before and once during the procedure. Patients in the control group received only standard treatment and nursing care. Results Patients in the guided imagery group reported lower pain and anxiety scores, higher patient satisfaction, and increased comfort compared with patients in the control group. Patients in the guided imagery group showed significantly lower respiratory rate and heart rate than the control group by the end of the procedure. There was no significant difference in blood pressure. Conclusion Practicing guided imagery before and during a procedure performed under local anesthesia reduced cancer patients’ pain, increased patient satisfaction and comfort, and had a positive effect on their respiratory and heart rates. Implications for Practice We recommend guided imagery as a practical, low-cost complementary therapy for patients receiving local anesthesia.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate prenatal education and its relationship with anxiety and stress in pregnant women. METHODS: This research was carried out between July 1, 2022, and December 1, 2023, at Giresun Gynecology and Pediatrics Training and Research Hospital. Women aged >18 years at >20 weeks of pregnancy were included. Patients were randomized into two groups, and one group received a 4 week training on meditation, breathing exercises, and pregnancy-related health issues. A questionnaire was applied to both groups to analyze sociodemographic characteristics, pregnancy, birth, medical history, the Pregnancy Stress Rating Scale, and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory. RESULT: The groups were similar in terms of age, educational status, anthropometric characteristics, occupation, economic status, and gestational week. There was no difference between the trained and nontrained groups in terms of the Pregnancy Stress Rating Scale score and the State Trait Anxiety Inventory-state score. The State Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait was significantly lower in the trained group (p=0.033). There were weak positive correlations between Pregnancy Stress Rating Scale score and medication use and between State Trait Anxiety Inventory-state score and age. A negative correlation was found between the State Trait Anxiety Inventory-state score and working status, showing that employed women had lower anxiety scores irrespective of training. Another weak positive correlation was found between the State Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait score and the presence of comorbidities. CONCLUSION: State Trait Anxiety Inventory-trait anxiety was lower in pregnant women who received training on prenatal meditation, exercise, and pregnancy health; however, State Trait Anxiety Inventory-state and Pregnancy Stress Rating Scale scores were similar in the two groups. Unemployed pregnant women and those with chronic diseases appear to need closer follow-up to reduce anxiety levels.

Objective: In addition to pregnancy-specific anxiety, women experience additional anxiety related to diseases or complications that occur during pregnancy. It is reported that approximately 23% of women experience generalized anxiety disorders during pregnancy, with an increased frequency of anxiety disorders, particularly in the third trimester. Material and Methods: This cross-sectional study obtained data from pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews using a Demographic Information Form, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Pregnancy Experience Scale (PES). The sociodemographic, clinical, and obstetric characteristics of the participants were gathered and documented through a Demographic Information Form developed by the researchers. The study was completed with a total of 358 pregnant participants. Results: The average age of the pregnant women participating in the study was 29.01 ± 5.37 years. When evaluating educational status, it was observed that 41.1% had completed high school. Regarding gestational weeks, 78.2% of the women were in the third trimester. Analysis of neurological conditions among pregnant women indicated that 74% reported experiencing migraines and headaches. The mean score for "state anxiety" was calculated as 40.33 ± 8.10, while for "trait anxiety," it was 37.79 ± 8.50. Exploring the average scores of the Pregnancy Experiences Scale (PES), the mean score for "positive frequency" was 27.28 ± 7.08, and for "negative frequency," it was 17.39 ± 5.55. Conclusion: Notably, among pregnant women with neurological disorders, the levels of state and trait anxiety displayed notable correlations with the frequency and intensity of both positive and negative pregnancy-related experiences. Recognizing and diagnosing mood and anxiety disorders early in pregnancy, particularly in the context of neurological conditions, holds significance in mitigating potential adverse impacts on both maternal and fetal well-being. Stressing the importance of appropriate interventions and care measures is pivotal in reducing these potential effects.
