Flood is a common disaster globally with devastating impact. Community flood disaster preparedness is neglected in developing countries, Nigeria inclusive, especially in the rural areas. This study assessed and compared the level of community flood disaster preparedness in flood-prone rural and urban communities in Kaduna State. A mixed method comparative cross-sectional study design and multistage sampling technique and data obtained from 202 household heads in each study group (rural and urban communities) using pretested structured questionnaires, focus group discussions (FGDs), key informant interviews (KIIs) and observational checklist. Multistage sampling technique was used to select the household heads for the quantitative study. Purposive sampling was used to select the community members for the FGDs, the community leaders and staff of Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for the KIIs. The quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS version 23.0. The qualitative data was analysed using content analysis. Majority of both the rural (99.0%) and urban (86.1%) communities were not prepared for flood disaster; 34% and 10% of the rural and urban communities respectively had flood disaster plans. Only 19.3% in the urban communities compared with 1% in the rural communities had early warning systems. There was statistically significant difference on community flood disaster preparedness between the urban and rural communities (p =0.001). Overall, the flood preparedness in both rural and urban communities was very poor, though slightly better in the urban communities. There is need for training of the communities by the relevant stakeholder such as SEMA on flood disaster preparedness.

This research aimed to enhance the ability of disaster information literacy for the community of Langsa. The method used in this research was an experiment. The method population of the research was the citizens of Gampong Java and Meurandeh totaled 11904 inhabitants. Research samples obtained by purposive sampling technique. Total sample of 15% of the population was 1786 people. The data were analyzed using a statistical test based on the average (mean) of each variable.The result shows that the process of improving information literacy of disaster brings an increase in familiarity with the community's preparedness against disasters and floods. It proved to be on improving the ability of the population in identifying and evaluating the factors that cause the occurrence of floods. The community began to be able to integrate the information flood-related information. Apart from that, the community has also wished to plan a village emergency response scheme for floods Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memecahkan permasalahan mengenai kemampuan literasi kebencanaan masyarakat Kota Langsa. Metode penelitian adalah eksperimen. Populasi penelitian adalah warga Gampong Jawa dan Meurandeh berjumlah 11.904 jiwa. Sampel penelitian diperoleh melalui teknik purposive sampling. Jumlah sampel 15% dari populasi adalah 1.786 orang. Data dianalisis menggunakan uji statistika berdasarkan rata-rata (mean) dari masing-masing variabel. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa proses peningkatan literasi informasi kebencanaan membawa peningkatan kepahaman dan kesiapsiagaan masyarakat terhadap bencana banjir. Hal tersebut terbukti pada peningkatan kemampuan masyarakat dalam mengidentifikasi dan mengevaluasi faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan terjadinya banjir. Masyarakat mulai dapat mengintegrasikan informasiinformasi terkait bencana banjir. Selain itu, masyarakat juga berkeinginan untuk melakukan perancangan skema tanggap darurat Gampong terhadap bencana banjir.This is an open access article under the CC-BY-SA license.

Disaster Risk Reduction Efforts (PRB) continue to be built and addressed through various activities considering that Indonesia is a country that is prone to disasters. In the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0, with an abundance of information The educational community as one of the important stakeholders Risk Reduction Efforts (PRB) were required to be critical of the information that was spread out including disaster information. However, students do not aware with the abundance of information available that is appropriate for the basis of disaster preparedness. Therefore the writing of this article aims to measure the level of critical thinking and its contribution to disaster preparedness, especially flooding, in geography education students. The research method chosen in this study is the Quantitative Survey. The results showed that the level of critical thinking and disaster preparedness of students included in the medium category. The results of the contribution of critical thinking to disaster preparedness showed the result of R square (R2) determination of 50.4%. This shows that critical thinking has an influence on student disaster preparedness. Therefore, it is time to think critically about information to be the focus in one of the efforts in disaster preparedness activities.
