Analysis of failure in landfill construction elements

Abstract: The paper presents issues related to the failure of construction elements on landfills. The study investigates threats deriving from landfills, which are the result of emergency events. It reviews landfill failures of different types, showing how they may affect the natural environment, human health and safety. The research is aimed at identifying the causes of these events and at presenting the schedule of remedial works and methods of removing the effects of failures occurring in a selected landfill. Based o… Show more

“…Nevertheless, even if the landfill is properly designed, some emergency cases can occur. The most probable reason of contamination near engineered landfill may result from the failure of the leachate collecting system (well, pipeline, pumping system) and the rapture of geomembrane [45]. The degradation of geomembrane associated with material aging and defect evolution, may increase leachate leakage significantly.…”

“…When applying this treatment, the use of a mineral insulation is the best option. However, it should be adapted to the conditions of soil selection, as well as the rules of embedding the material and testing the quality of works, so as not to cause failure of the structural elements (Koda, Grzyb, Osiński & Vaverková, 2019).…”

“…The observational method is always a combination of a common geotechnical site investigation, theoretical modeling, and plans for unpredicted scenarios. Using only monitoring results, the structure safety is assured to not be enough according to the international standards [22,23]. The key is to identify the potential failure mechanism.…”
