Analysis of Factors Associated With Biliary Complications in Children After Liver Transplantation

Abstract: Technical factors play a major role in the development of BCs, particularly leaks. Strictures are more frequently associated with an inadequate arterial supply to the bile duct, and multiple arterial anastomoses may protect children from this complication. The use of partial grafts was not an independent factor for BCs in high-volume centers that are experienced with this technique.

“…An additional 2 patients had biliary strictures that required intervention during the follow‐up period. Although no HAT was noted in these patients during the perioperative period, compromised blood flow is a known risk for late biliary complications . As such, future efforts to better understand the relationship between these OA and transplant‐related vascular and biliary complications are needed.…”

“…However, our findings of increased intraoperative blood loss in patients developing biliary complications ( P < 0.001) has been reported in a few other studies. 25,26 A recent study on a large cohort of liver transplanted children did not see a correlation between intraoperative blood units transfused and the development of biliary complications, 27 suggesting adults might be more sensitive to intraoperative blood loss and development of such complications.…”
