Analysis of Energy Saving Effect and Cost Efficiency of ECMs to Upgrade the Building Energy Code

Abstract: Building energy codes are key policy tools for improving building energy efficiency by defining the minimum requirement for the energy performance of new buildings. In Korea, the building energy code was focused on prescriptive criteria for a long time but is now gradually introducing performance criteria. However, switching to performance criteria is not straightforward because of the resistance of the market to abandoning the well-consolidated prescriptive criteria. The objective of this study is to derive a… Show more

“…This alternative could also present superior cost benefits when compared with the implementation of higher performance windows (doble reflective or triple pane low-e windows) or the replacement of obsolete equipment with more energy-efficient devices. The introduction of higher COP air-conditioners in old buildings could represent an important investment that should not be neglected, even when this measure could allow for energy savings ranging from 6 to more than 30% for different SEER values [67]. Therefore, this should be rethought for being used in new building projects and prioritize other low-cost measures for retrofitting purposes.…”

“…According Jacobsen and Kotchen (2013) Energy codes play a crucial role in reducing energy consumption across various sectors, as residential and commercial buildings, software development, and industrial processes. Kim et al (2020) underscore that BEEC codes play a crucial role in attaining energy efficiency goals for newly built structures and decreasing energy consumption and carbon emissions. And also can increase Thermal Comfort ,the assessment of the impacts of updating energy codes has been crucial in understanding the potential effects on construction and energy consumption costs (Lucas, 2003).…”

“…Building energy efficiency codes (BEEC) are are one of the main tools developed to enhance BEE, providing mandatory levels of energy performance for new construction and major renovations. In this way, compliance with these codes is a prerequisite for improving building BEE (Kim et al, 2020), Xie (2020) republic, 1967).…”

“…Moreover, the modelling results in [167] show that the most effective way to reduce evening peak demands is by switching light bulbs to LED, which results in reductions of total appliance electricity demand by 18.8%, total residential electricity demand by 14.2%, and total national electricity demand by 5%. Whereas authors in [168] adopted both active and passive measures in buildings and discovered that installing PV systems and decreasing lighting power density had the best energy-saving ratio.…”
