Analysis of effectiveness of fire safety in machinery spaces

Abstract: The primary cause of machinery space fires is cited as the release of flammable oil mist contacting unprotected hot surfaces. With this being common knowledge why do we continue to see this type of incident reoccurring on ships carrying thousands of passengers to precarious destinations? We review regulatory and Class requirements with respect to fire safety, Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) as a rule-making instrument of the IMO, accident investigation recommendations involving fire, fire safety technology, and… Show more

“…De acordo com Zhang e Shi (2019), segurança ao fogo é um estado no qual os recursos financeiros e materiais das pessoas não são infringidas. A fim de proporcionar essa segurança, a reflexão sobre como o fogo acontece e se desenvolve é necessária para prevenir ou controlar os incêndios por meio de métodos a serem implementadas (MACNAY, et al, 2019).…”

“…The latest study by McNay in 2019 focused on the current approach and effectiveness to fire safety in machinery spaces. Taking a closer look at incident prevention, they studied about the bias toward direct causal factors that may be attributed to the widespread application of linear, event‐based models to accident analysis.…”

“…This is because this room has many mechanical and electrical components including fuel that produces heat. When the surface of a thermal object interacts with the fuel, a fire will easily occur [7], [8]. However, fire and heat were not the only cause of death of the crew but also due to the presence of smoke and gas [9].…”
