“…The results indicate that T p influences Δx and ΔV ; in particular, Δx and ΔV increase for larger values of T p in accordance with van Gent et al (2008). More in detail, the influence of T p on Δx and ΔV is evident after the first wave attack; for n larger than 250, the observed values of Δx and ΔV are quite similar.…”

“…Sallenger et al (2003) describes four regimes of storm attack on a beach/dune system: 1. swash regime with wave run-up confined to the foreshore; 2. collision regime with swash and run-up to the dune face; 3. overwash regime with wave overtopping the dune crest; 4. breaching and inundation regime. With regard to the collision regime, experiments on dune erosion using large-scale models have been performed by Vellinga (1986), Delft Hydraulics (1982a,b, 1984a,b, 1987, 2004, Van Gent et al (2008). Similar experiments have been done in Germany (Dette et al 1998) focusing on German coastal conditions and in the USA (Kraus and Smith 1994) focusing on USA coasts.…”

“…Coincident with the shape transformation of the incident ocean waves, difference interactions ( f 1 2 f 2 5 f 3 ) also transfer energy to infragravity waves (e.g., Herbers et al 1994). Infragravity waves, longer (20-200 s) period waves, may be important for the erosion of beaches (e.g., Russell 1993) and dunes (Van Thiel de Vries et al 2008) during storms. They are bound to the short-wave groups with a 1808 phase difference (Longuet-Higgins and Stewart 1962), and have the same wave period and wavelength as the group.…”

“…While changes in sea level and wave angle will be regional (Idier et al 2013;Cazenave and Cozannet 2014;Slangen et al 2014), coastal response will be local, depending on offshore bathymetric characteristics (e.g., Claudino-Sales et al 2008), or the dune morphology themselves (e.g., Van Thiel De Vries et al 2010;De Winter et al 2015). Several impact assessments have been executed to evaluate the possible impact of climate change on local coastal hazards, such as the coast of Oregon, USA, where besides SLR, future occurrences of EL Niño are included (Baron et al 2015) or the coasts of California, USA, where different types of coasts are present (e.g.…”
