Analysis of DoS attacks at MAC Layer in mobile adhoc networks

Abstract: Wireless network security has received tremendous attention due to the vulnerabilities exposed in the open communication medium. The most common wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is IEEE 802.11, which assumes all the nodes in the network are cooperative. However, nodes may purposefully misbehave in order to disrupt network performance, obtain extra bandwidth and conserve resources. These MAC layer misbehaviours can lead to Denial of Service (DoS) attacks which can disrupt the network operation. The… Show more

“…Chaminda Alocious [2015]et al This paper reasons that DOS attacks with selfish/malicious, mean can get no less than 50% better throughput with the aid of denying well-behaved nodes to receive deserved throughput, also DOS attacks with the intend of complete destruction which permit simplest less than 5% throughput for well-behaved nodes which at last prompted close down of the network. The simulation results demonstrate that presenting DOS attacks at MAC layer would gigantically influence the system throughput and data packet collision rate [7].…”

“…The Work of Alocious et al [4] have conducted an analytical study of Misbehaviors of Mac layer under DoS attack with IEEE 802.11 protocol in the MANETs Surroundings. The outcome of the study display that the DoS attack on MAC layer degrades the performance of network in terms of throughput and higher data packet loss rate.…”

“…There has been many research to analyse MAC layer misbehaviours in Wireless Networks. The research in [3] has conducted an analysis of MAC layer DoS attacks in MANETs. The authors have analysed both sender and receiver misbe-haviours and concludes that misbehaving nodes can obtain a larger throughput which significantly affect the network performance, even capable of completely freeze the network at higher rate attacks.…”
