Analysis of digitized 3D mesh curvature histograms for reverse engineering

Abstract: Today, it has become more frequent and reasonably easy to digitize the surface of 3D objects. However, the obtained results are often inaccurate and noisy. In this paper, we present an efficient method to analyze a curvature histogram from a digitized 3D surface using a real object. Moreover, we propose to use the curvature histogram analysis for many steps of a reverse engineering process, which can be used to retrieve a CAD model from a digitized one for example. Our objective is to design a fast and fully a… Show more

“…Then required a method of reverse engineering in order to recreate a three dimensional model. [7,8] The solution was provided by using Geomagic, a software that provides accurate three dimensional digital models and assemblies of CAD type natural objects. This software helped to modify the model file from .obj to x_t file.…”

“…D. Xia et al [7] performed numerical and analytical investigations to reduce the noise data properties for regions-of-interest (ROI), and reconstruct the images based on chord image reconstructions using different scanning configurations. S. Gauthier et al [8] proposed a method based on analyze and segment the digitized 3D surface mesh curvature histogram using a real object through detecting the peak and valley primitives, also proposed to use the curvature histogram analysis to measure the quality of mesh for a lot of reverse engineering steps, which could be used to construct the CAD model. C. Mineo et al [9], suggests a filtering approach to identify the boundary points and spatial procedure that use Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), the approach generate the tessellated surfaces directly without noise from the points cloud data by detecting the points of the sharp and creases edges.…”

“…Kisztner et al introduced an algorithm based on image processing and remote sensing to create a software and procedure using cluster analysis and spectral behavior analysis to general use for vegetation separation from the 3D data cloud acquired by Terrestrial Laser Scanning [3]. Gauthier et al have proposed a method to analyze a histogram of curvature for an actual object using a digitized 3D surface, also propose using the analysis of the curvature histogram to retrieve a CAD model for many steps of a reverse engineering process [4]. Lee and Bo were suggested a smooth reconstructs feature curves approach and refine incident approximation planes from the 3D point cloud based on intersections of developable strip pairs and approximation of the point cloud as linear segments to collect the features of the curves [5].…”
