The article analyzes the role of lighting in portrait photography, emphasizing how the harmony between light and shadow can affect the emotional depth and visual appeal of an image. Photography, presented as an art and science of light, requires not only professional skills, but also the talent and skill of the photographer. The skill of a photographer lies not only in technical execution, but also in the ability to convey life and emotions through the image, revealing the true character of a person. Thus, a portrait photographer should be able to capture the soul and inner world of the model, which is a sign of his or her true skill. The article pays special attention to lighting under artificial lighting. It further discusses such aspects as distance between the subject and the light source, directionality of light, the size of light source and the distance to the subject, as well as the importance of shape of reflector. The different types of lighting in portrait photography are also discussed: back, side, front, diffused, and hard light, each of which affects the final image. The study includes analysis of current trends and innovative lighting techniques in portrait photography. It emphasizes the importance of the photographer’s ability to use different light sources to create images that reflect uniqueness and personality of the model. This study aims to expand the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of photographers, striving to improve the quality and expressiveness of portrait images.

“…Digital photography has grown tremendously since it was first developed in the 1970s in terms of access, quality, and cultural integration. Growth during the past 2 decades has been significant, with the introduction of affordable (<$1,000) DSLR cameras, inexpensive (<$100) point-and-click digital cameras, and—most importantly—the incorporation of digital camera technology with smartphones beginning in 2007 with the introduction of iPhone (Lu et al 2022, Trenholm 2021). Over the past 2 decades, digital photography has grown increasingly accessible. This has ushered in a golden age of community science, where nonspecialists share natural history observations from across the globe via digital media. Importantly, these observations are accessible to researchers, who can readily share expertise directly with the community and connect observations and observers with research projects. This has fueled a rising number of publications combining specialist and nonspecialist observations, which occasionally make national and international headlines. Entomology has embraced this trend, but the scope and impact are not clear. A review of its effect on the field is therefore warranted. Herein, we review and analyze publications that incorporated information from photographs shared on photo-sharing websites. In total, 2,123 publications that incorporated information from 77 photo-sharing websites were examined. Seven websites accounted for 66% of the publication citations. 84.6% of publications focused on data from the Holarctic ecoregion (56.2% Palearctic and 28.4% Nearctic). Forty-six arthropod orders were represented, but the Big Five—Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Hemiptera, and Diptera—accounted for 75% of all publications. We divide the publications into 28 discovery and use categories, review how community photograph data has been used within each category, and provide examples of categories utilized in nonentomology natural history fields, which we hope will provide inspiration and spur future research. We also discuss benefits and considerations when using such data—including the accuracy of identifications, inherent biases, and digital data impermanence—and suggest best practices to follow.

The limitations of the learning media on fashion photo editing materials become the main obstacle to achieving basic digital photo editing competence in the Fashion Photography course. Therefore, it is necessary to develop relevant modules. This study aims to develop an SKKNI-based basics fashion photo editing module for fashion students that can be used in the learning activities of fashion photography. This study is a research and development conducted using the ADDIE model. The subjects of this study were 30 students of the Fashion Design Study Program. The data were obtained from product evaluation by material experts and media experts as well as field trials involving research subjects. These data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques. The result of this study is a basic module for fashion photo editing based on the basic digital photo processing competency sub-unit materials in the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards of Photography. From the material aspect, the developed module was considered valid (0.85) and reliable (0.742). The media aspect of the module was also regarded as valid (0.82) and reliable (0.714). Thus, it can be concluded that the module developed was of expert quality and feasible to use. Based on the percentage of students achieving the minimum passing grade, the developed module is categorized as effective (80%) as a learning media in the basic materials of fashion photo editing.
