Analysis of Data Management in Blockchain-Based Systems: From Architecture to Governance

Abstract: In a blockchain-based system, data and the consensus-based process of recording and updating them over distributed nodes are central to enabling the trustless multi-party transactions. Thus, properly understanding what and how the data are stored and manipulated ultimately determines the degree of utility, performance, and cost of a blockchain-based application. While blockchains enhance the quality of the data by providing a transparent, immutable, and consistent data store, the technology also brings new cha… Show more

“…Furthermore, improvements in the understanding about what and how the BC data are stored and manipulated are essential to favor the adoption of BC‐based applications. Indeed, BCs favor the access to data in the agrifood supply chains, but also bring new challenges from a data management perspective (Paik, Xu, Dilum, Sung, & Lo, 2019). Indeed, even if BC data are in encrypted form, they could be subject to brute‐force decryption attacks in the future or lead to unintended privacy leakages.…”

“…As recently revised by Paik et al. (2019), the development of adequate frameworks for BC data governance should be favored in the next future to promote an effective management and proper use of BCTs.…”

“…Its data structure is formed by a time sequence of digital blocks of transactions without a central control point. Blockchain is essentially an irreversible digital ledger on which decentralized applications can be built [27]. In a blockchain network there is no need for a trusted third-party (TTP) to process a transaction as this is replaced with a decentralized system.…”

“…MetaMask has functionalities akin to an Ethereum wallet, it acts like a bridge between the web browser and Ethereum blockchain. All the documents are first stored in the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) because it is prohibitively expensive to store a lot of data on the Ethereum blockchain [18][19]. The InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a protocol and peer-to-peer network for storing and sharing data in a distributed file system.…”
