Use of UAS and TLS technology in 3D modeling of constructions with complex architecture

3D building models are widely used in many applications. The use of terrestrial laser scanning and UAS photogrammetry for 3D modelling is a popular practice especially for constructions with complex architecture. The present article presents an example of using these technologies successfully for 3D modelling of the Episcopal Cathedral of the Holy Trinity from Baia Mare, Romania. A number of 51 control and verification points were determined by the closed circuit travel method and the intersection method. All measurements were processed in Terramodel software. The control points used in the georeferencing of the scans were materialized by metal stakes and the verification points were materialized by reflective targets. Depending on the construction configuration, the field of view and the minimum/maximum scanning distances were subsequently set. A total of 45 scans were performed to model the entire cathedral. The photogrammetric flight was performed in RTK mode, with corrections being transmitted from the DJI D-RTK-2 Mobile Station base to the RTK drone. All retrieved frames had geolocation and frame orientation elements recorded by the IMU module. A total number of 222 photograms were taken, as a result of a double grid photogrammetric flight, with the camera oriented at 60 degrees, but also as a result of manual acquisition by performing orbital flights at different heights: an orbital flight on the ground floor, an orbital flight at the level of about 40 meters and an orbital flight around the tower.

Spherical cameras are being used more frequently in surveying because of their low cost and possibility to process spherical images with conventional SfM methods. Fish-eye lenses are now frequently found on modern 360° cameras, allowing for the capture of the entire scene and subsequent model reconstitution by a non-photogrammetrist specialist. Gyrospherics are a feature of cameras that ensure image stabilization to reduce blur when the camera is moving. This feature allows it to capture moving scenes in time-lapse mode. However, two main factors - hardware parameters and software algorithms - affect the quality of the images that are captured. The 360° camera design allows for a variety of data processing methods by SfM. These images were created using multiple image sensors and lenses from each 360° camera. These images can be processed individually or by applying rules to define relationships between images. Also, images from cameras can be stitched and processed with a spherical camera model. In this paper is proposed processing methods of data from 360° cameras and estimated accuracy of each method.

In contemporary times, technology has dramatically simplified the process of documenting cultural heritage objects. This paper aims to illustrate modern methodologies for documenting historical monuments by applying advanced technologies, as these case studies show. Two technologies were used: laser scanning and digital photogrammetry. The first subject of our study was a historically significant 16th-century building located in Jachymov, situated in the North-West region of the Czech Republic. The object was documented by laser scanning (BLK360) and using a standard digital camera Canon Powershot SX230 HS. The laser scanning data were post-processed using Cyclone Register 360 Plus, while photogrammetric point clouds were generated with Agisoft Metashape. The second objects were a building and a sculpture in the historical UNESCO city of Telč; here laser scanning instruments, digital photogrammetry and a new one low-cost ViDoc documentation system were use. Our study is focused on analyzing the sets of point clouds obtained from the data processing, conducted using CloudCompare to draw insights and conclusions. It turns out that the rapid development of techniques and technology makes it possible to use low-cost devices for sufficiently accurate and fast documentation; however, the mentioned ViDOC device can only be used for very close and small objects up to about 5 meters. For the documentation of sculptures, classic close-range photogrammetry is especially appropriate; for the documentation of buildings, laser scanners are suitable; the problem here is with hidden spaces and it is often necessary to use either a platform or a combination with photogrammetry using a drone, especially for the upper parts of the object.
