Analysis of conditions for synthesis of CdS:Mn nanoparticles

Abstract: Abstract. The detailed analysis of the synthesis of CdS:Mn nanoparticles in polyvinyl alcohol polymeric matrix is presented and the ranges of optimal growth parameters are determined. The estimated values of parameters were used to produce solutions of CdS:Mn nanoparticles and corresponding solid composites. The sizes of nanoparticles and structure of composite films were characterized by electron microscopy methods, optical properties were probed using photoluminescence methods.

“…The precursors for NPs growth—CdCl 2 and Na 2 S salts—were step-wise added to the growth solution. In order to avoid undesirable byproducts, especially, to prevent the formation of Cd(OH) 2 , the overall amount of precursors and pH value of the solution were calculated as described in [ 12 ]. Each synthesis step was done at ambient conditions.…”

“…The addition of the CNTs into the LC host may change the ordering and the phase transition characteristic of the host [10][11][12][13][14]. It has been reported by several groups that the distribution of CNTs in the host LC can change the visco-elastic [15], electrical [2,4,16,17] and electro-optical properties of LC [4,[18][19][20]. These characteristics have been exploited in traditional applications such as LC displays, shutters, and LC lenses.…”

“…Pending the growth process, the precursors (salts CdCl 2 and Na 2 S) were added step-wise to the growth solution thus sustaining concentrations of the precursors and pH values in ranges that ensured a gradual increase of NPs sizes and, simultaneously, eliminated formation of Cd(OH) 2 . Optimal ranges of these parameters were estimated by analyzing probabilities of possible chemical reactions in the solution as 10 −4 …10 −2 mol/L for the salts and pH = 3…5 [29]. Sulfur excess conditions were maintained during the growth.…”
