Analysis of Color Uniformity of White LED Lens Packages for Direct-lit LCD Backlight Applications

Abstract: Recently, the color separation issue of wide-spreading white LEDs has attracted attention due to their wide applicability as light sources in direct-lit LCD backlights. These wide-spreading LED packages usually consist of LED chips, a color-conversion phosphor layer, and a light-shaping lens. The technical aspect of this color issue was related to a method for balancing the yellow spectral component emitting from phosphors with respect to the blue one from the LED chip as a function of viewing angle. In this s… Show more

“…Near-IR reflectance behavior of artifacts and natural objects made of various materials also should be investigated in further research. In addition, the spatial uniformity of the illuminator could be enhanced by improving the optical design of components, such as the lens, and the beam shaping diffuser [21]. It is expected that multiple-spectral illuminations provided by an illuminator with a narrow half-width, such as a laser, used in conjunction with a high-resolution camera, would be helpful to enhance the color image quality.…”

“…Usually 1-3 MLA films are adopted in a backlight, and a moiré pattern may be formed when the number of the MLA films is at least two. In this study, several approaches for avoiding moirés between two HA-MLA films were investigated by optical simulation based on the ray-tracing technique [12]. In general, moiré formation between the MLA and the LCD pixel array is regarded as a more serious problem in LCD.…”

“…Therefore optical films are generally employed when LED lighting devices are assembled and packaged. Their role is to redistribute the light rays coming out from the point LED sources and uniformly radiate onto the forward direction without sacrificing illuminance [1][2][3][4].…”
