Analysis of climatic risk for cattle and buffalo production in northeast Thailand

Abstract: A study of thermal stress risk for cattle and buffalo was made in the Northeast Region of Thailand. Three-hourly air and dew-point temperatures from 15 selected meteorological stations for the period 1990 to 1999 were used to compute values of the temperature/humidity index (THI). Maps of isolines of THI values were generated by geographical software. A THI > or = 84 was assumed to represent conditions where production losses would be likely to occur. Across the study area, the mean total number of days with T… Show more

“…Jini et al (2015) examined variations in temperature and RH in different climatological areas in NE India and highlighted the need for poultry farmers and extension personnel to know the critical periods of the year when management of heat stress becomes essential for their locations. This was also noted by Du Preez et al (1990) in South Africa and de la Casa and Ravelo (2003) in Argentina for dairy cattle and Somparn et al (2004) in Thailand for cattle and buffalo.…”

“…As consições meteorológicas observadas seguiram padrão semelhante às médias históricas entre 1967 e 1996, para o local do experimento (Pacheco & Bastos, 2007). A caracterização do ambiente demonstra o desafio enfrentado pelos animais para se manterem saudáveis e produtivos na Amazônia, pois o ITU ideal para produção de bubalinos deve estar abaixo de 74,0 (Somparn et al, 2004).…”

“…Previous animal biometeorology studies have utilized THI to characterize the region of Córdoba in central Argentina (De la Casa and Ravelo 2003), and the northeast region of Thailand (Somparn et al 2004). To the best of our knowledge, the Mediterranean basin has been characterized by focusing the attention on air temperature and precipitation dynamics (Brunetti et al 2000;Klein Tank and Können 2003;Xoplaki et al 2004Xoplaki et al , 2005Touchan et al 2005;Scherrer et al 2006;Pauling and Paeth 2007), whereas no studies have been performed by utilizing THI.…”
