Analysis of circulation near the coast of Western Crimea and the region of Sevastopol with assimilation of temperature and salinity observations

Abstract: Hydrophysical fields which are continuous in time and space are reconstructed in the coastal zone of the Black Sea (near the coast of Western Crimea and the region of Sevastopol) by a three-dimensional nonlinear hydrodynamic model with assimilation of observational data of the 2007 hydrological survey. A sequential optimal interpolation of temperature and salinity observations is used as the assimilation procedure. We use real atmospheric forcing and a high resolution (a horizontal grid of ~1.6×1.6 km and 31 v… Show more

“…According to the results obtained in the calculation in this study and in [25], the following circulation features were revealed: an anticyclonic eddy with a radius of about 15 km in the upper water layer in the Kalamita Bay, an anticyclonic eddy with a radius of about 15 km in the entire water layer between 32.2° E and 32.4° E related to the Rim Current meandering. On September 22 and 23, in the upper 36-meter layer the current, directed to the north and northwest, increased near Sevastopol and along the western coast of Crimea.…”

“…1). Control animals were maintained at salinity 18 ‰ (salinity of the Black Sea at the site of capture), and for experimental groups, mussels were exposed to low salinity (6 ‰, 10 ‰, 14 ‰) and high salinity (24 ‰, 30 ‰ and 40 ‰) (Evstigneeva & Demyshev, 2019). Water temperature, oxygen concentration and pH were equal for control and experimental groups and corresponded to those for acclimation period.…”
