Analysis of Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter in DTC-SVM Induction Motor Drive for FCEV

Abstract: -In this paper, analysis of cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter in DTC-SVM (Direct Torque Control-Space Vector Modulation) based induction motor drive for FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) is presented. Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter uses multiple series units of H-bridge power cells to achieve medium-voltage operation and low harmonic distortion. In FCEV, a fuel cell stack is used as the major source of electric power moreover the battery and/or ultra-capacitor is used to assist the fuel cell. These … Show more

“…Three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) with proportional-integral (PI) control methods with distinct pulse width modulation (PWM) blocks have been popularly used to provide output currents with controllable amplitude and controllable frequency [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. In the VSI, common-mode voltages generated by the fast switching operation have been known to give rise to overvoltage stress to the winding insulation of drives and to conduct or radiate electromagnetic interference, which can affect the functionality of other electronic systems in the vicinity [9].…”

“…After convolution with h and g quadrature mirror filters, it is decomposed into an approximation component c 1 [n] and a detail component d 1 [n] at scale 1. Then approximation component c 1 [n] is further decomposed into c 2 [n] and d 2 [n] at the next scale and so on. This type of hierarchical decomposition can be mathematically represented as,…”

“…The major advantages of multilevel inverters are the reduction in harmonic distortion of output voltage waveform with increase in number of levels and flexibility to use a set of batteries or fuel cells in any intermediate stages [1][2][3]. Even though multilevel inverters have made their way successfully to the industrial applications with a proven technology, failure of power electronic switches and its fault diagnosis is still a hot research topic of many researchers.…”

“…Cascaded STATCOM is characterized by large voltage levels, small harmonic current, high system efficiency, small and few passive components and ease of expansion [1][2][3], and hence leading the trend of FACTS (Flexible Alternative Current Transmission Systems) technology development [4]. Moreover, it's an effective way to solve the power quality problems in high voltage and high power applications.…”
