Analysis of barriers for implementation of integrated Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0 using interpretive ranking process

Abstract: PurposeLean Six Sigma (LSS) is a continuous improvement procedure that helps in improving the performance, decreasing variations, reducing lead time and increasing profit. Industry 4.0 (I4.0) portrays a new phase in the enterprise and aims at digitalization of the enterprise. The basis of I4.0 is a cyber-physical system, leading to product networking and complete coordination of process, value enhancement and further optimization. Integrating LSS methodology with I4.0 will give an edge in competitiveness to an… Show more

“…Additionally, there was evidence of the benefits generated from integrations based on evidence from several authors, confirming these beneficial relationships, as cited by Sordan et al (2022), andTissir et al (2022). Furthermore, the results here confirm that SS helps implement and supports I4.0 technologies, with greater emphasis on Big Data/BDA e IoT, allowing organizations to take advantage of opportunities with this knowledge (Chiarini and Kumar, 2020;Gijo et al, 2021;Vinodh and Shimray, 2022).…”

“…There is a need for explicitly studying SS/LSS integrations with I4.0 to help organizations practically implement and support managers (Antony et al, 2022;Tissir et al, 2022;Vinodh and Shimray, 2022). However, to overcome these challenges, or take advantage of future opportunities, one must first understand which technologies support SS, along with any integration relationships that may exist, how they occur and the changes and benefits to SS brought about by I4.0 (Antony et al, 2019;Saidi and Soulhi, 2018;Chiarini and Kumar, 2020;Gijo et al, 2021;Vinodh and Shimray, 2022). The motivation for this study came from the lack of studies on integrations between I4.0 and SS, along with the need for understanding the changes that I4.0 can bring about to SS and the potential benefits of certain integrations.…”

“…More experimental research is needed to identify the benefits and critical barriers of LSS 4.0 in the manufacturing and service sectors of Large and, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (Antony et al, 2023). There is an urgent need to develop appropriate strategies for overcoming the barriers to successful LSS 4.0 implementation in all types of organizations and sectors (Vinodh and Shimray, 2022). There is a potential opportunity for future researchers to work on finding an appropriate method to integrate LSS tools and techniques with the technologies of I4.0 (Kumar et al, 2022).…”
