Analysis of Automotive Camera Sensor Noise Factors and Impact on Object Detection

Abstract: Assisted and Automated Driving functions are increasingly deployed to support improved safety, efficiency, and enhance driver experience. However, there are still key technical challenges that need to be overcome as the degradation of perception sensor data due to noise factors. The quality of data being generated by sensors can directly impact the planning and control of the vehicle, which in turn can affect the vehicle safety. A framework to analyse noise factor effects on automotive environmental perception… Show more

“…For instance, comparing point clouds against reference data allows for evaluating sensor data quality, particularly in adverse weather conditions or other degradation events, with respect to AAD system safety requirements. Previous studies have highlighted the significant impact of degradation caused by poor weather conditions on perception algorithms [5], [6], [23]. Additionally, ensuring the safety of autonomous driving systems requires extensive testing, which is impractical through real-world driving alone.…”

“…However, despite the current advancements of sensor technologies and unique features of each perception sensor [20],degradation of measurements due to sensor noise is inevitable [21]. Sensor noise refers to the random variation inherent in the measurements that can be attributed to a wide range of factors from intrinsic limitations, such as a low resolution or design imperfections, to extrinsic influences, such as atmospheric conditions or electromagnetic interference [22].…”

“…In other words, some parts of the DNNs are non-deterministic by design. Also, noise and input degradation can affect how well the DNNbased models work in practice [6]. Hence, detecting errors in DNN-based systems fundamentally differs from traditional automation systems (e.g., anti-lock braking system) and is hereafter defined with a different term, "introspection".…”
