Analysis of attitudinal components towards statistics among students from different academic degrees

Abstract: Despite its important position in academic and scientific fields, as well as in daily life, statistics is a subject that generates negative attitudes within most t disciplines in the college curriculum. This paper proposes a method for analysing different students' attitudes toward statistics using paired ANOVA tests for comparing components and groups, and discriminant analysis application for measuring the discriminant power of different components. This method was applied to a sample of 145 teachers in trai… Show more

“…This scale has been widely used since its publication in 1932 by Likert [4] and is supported by numerous handbooks, such as [5], which are important references in the study of attitudes. There are numerous quantitative studies of attitudes using a Likert scale [6][7][8], and, for purposes of this study, attitudes regarding mathematics [9][10][11][12]. However, when constructing the factors to be measured, the linearity of the scale is implicitly imposed, and it is assumed that all the items have the same weight.…”

“…Los estudiantes de Ingenierías muestran mayor seguridad con la asignatura Estadística en comparación con los estudiantes de Medicina, lo que se traduce en mayor confianza en la resolución e interpretación de hallazgos estadísticos. Lo anterior puede explicarse debido a que los estudiantes de Ingenierías reciben formación específica en asignaturas similares y relacionadas con la Estadística, lo que ya ha sido propuesto por otros autores (León-Mantero et al, 2020;Mathew & Aktan, 2014).…”

“…It is a compulsory professional curriculum for preventive medicine students and its teaching purpose is to cultivate students’ logical thinking and problem-solving abilities [ 5 ]. Although statistics is very important in the training of medical students, those in various medical schools generally consider statistics difficult to learn, difficult to understand, and even unable to apply what they have learned [ 4 , 6 8 ]. Practice teaching of health statistics is to further consolidate students’ grasp of theoretical knowledge.…”
