Analysis of assessment methodologies suitable for building performance

Abstract: Purpose The paper aims to examine assessment tools for strategic performance evaluation of building and Norwegian practice in light of international practise. Design/methodology/approach This paper includes a literature review of literature describing the use of assessment tools suitable for building performance evaluation. In this paper, the authors examine, first, what properties they find most essential when assessing building portfolios. This analysis is outlined in the theoretical framework section. Sec… Show more

“…The development of MOM strategies and the technical systems considered suitable for the implementation of said strategies are crucial to achieving appropriate climate adaptation of existing buildings to ensure that they meet future functional requirements. In this context, the term functional refers to the expression of how the physical building works according to its purpose and fits the need of the user organization [20].…”

“…Although most buildings do not perform as planned, completing performance assessments in the operational stage has been a challenge in the building industry. The various performance evaluation approaches for buildings include benchmarking, post-occupancy evaluation (POE), balanced scorecard, critical success factors, and key performance indicators (Lai & Man, 2017;Lavy, Garcia, Scinto, & Dixit, 2014b;Støre-Valen & Lohne, 2016). POE has been used to obtain feedback on building performance (BRE Global, 2015;Lawrence & Keime, 2016;Leaman & Bordass, 2001).…”

“…Since energy consuming equipment are key components of the overall building system, a systematic asset management framework has the ability to enhance the durability of a building, while maintaining the target LOS and environmental performance. -Valen & Lohne (2016) highlighted that public buildings particularly need comprehensive operational performance assessment methods since they operate as service centres funded by tax money. Engineers' expert knowledge is focused mainly on the technical aspects and does not account for the service provided by the building (Han et al, 2015).…”

Keegan et al (1989) made a distinction between cost and non-cost indicators and internal versus external indicators.…”
