In the last decades problems concerning waste disposal have assumed increasing interest due to the growth of their production and typologies following consumption escalation. In an advanced industrial society waste constitute one of the main aspects concerning environment protection; their impact is linked to material quantity, typology and persistence into the environment. A correct waste management must be included within an integrated strategy of sustainable development: among the necessary actions aimed to reduce flows to landfills, regulations particularly indicate reduction of resource use, energy recovery, use of waste as a resource. Until today in Italy a sustainable management system has not been implemented yet, making frequent use of temporary solutions which only delay the problem come up. Within this frame, in the paper a case study has been analysed, referring to the collection and delivery system of Urban Solid Waste in Reggio Calabria, carrying out an analysis of the management process from an economic, energetic and environmental point of view. Analysing the phases following the collection (waste selection, transport, treatment), a critical evaluation of the used technologies has been conducted, assessing cost, energy consumption and pollutant emission. The analysed case has finally been compared with different scenarios, showing increasing percentage of differentiated collection, relating them to the least advanced disposal modality, landfill.

The technologies or techniques "e-sensing", in the past decade have had significant developments from the technical and commercial point of view. The term "e-sensing", refers to the ability to reproduce human senses by means of sensors and recognition systems. The proposed work has been developed within the doctoral thesis and is part of a larger research project about sensors underway at the Faculty of Engineering of Messina. The research, combining the knowledge of engineering methods and tools with medical and chemical competence, is oriented to the development of a system able of monitoring the exhaled air for diagnostic purposes, for the realization of electronic systems at a low cost, for the diagnostics in medicine. It was built an artificial olfactory system, known as "electronic nose", which allows monitoring the exhaled air components of patients undergoing a dialysis treatment. This diagnostic non-invasive method is able to provide at low cost, through the specific control of the markers of the exhaled air, some useful information to assess health of dialyzed patients. The realized device, was tested for biomedical applications and mainly for the specific monitoring of volatile biomarkers in the exhaled air, associated with certain medical conditions (eg. NH3 for nephrological diseases). It will allow to obtain an effective early diagnosis of the disease reducing care times and, at the same time, reducing the invasiveness of diagnostic treatments.

The term "Smart" in the last decade has often flanked other words to express a new and intelligent way of living in a modern society where you cannot separate the two synergic aspects: Energy and Sustainability. These latter two aspects flow into the new way of managing an isolated territory that often presents difficulties because of no interactions with the surrounding area; to remedy these difficulties has been developed in recent years the "Smart-Island" project, which involves many European countries and several sponsors. The concept of "SmartIsland" defines a way of life in an isolated environment, such as that of these islands, can solve independently, with the use of renewable and sustainable sources the energy needs of the island, with some projects that take into account the preservation and the wealth of the territory. In this paper, after a brief review of what has been proposed in some islands of the world, it will develop a case study, represented by the island of Favignana, which has particular characteristics in relation to its energy dependence.
