Analysis of Acupoints Combination for Cancer-Related Anorexia Based on Association Rule Mining

Abstract: We investigated the acupoint selection regulations and workable core acupoint combinations in cancer-related anorexia (CA) treatment. The Apriori algorithm, complemented by the FP-growth algorithm, was used to mine association rules based on retrieved randomized control trials (RCTs) and clinical control trials (CCTs). We searched the following databases for acupuncture treatment regimens for CA: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, WanFang Data, VIP, China Journal Full-Text Database (CNKI), and S… Show more

“…The loss of weight and muscle mass can be attributed to several factors such as decreased food intake, anorexia, insulin resistance, and low levels of anabolic hormones [ 6 ]. The involvement of the neuroendocrine system in cachexia and the role of the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and adrenal gland in controlling appetite have recently gained attention in cancer cachexia study [ 16 21 ]. The hypothalamus is the key regulator of energy homeostasis, especially in fine-tuning the energy balance by delivering signals to coordinate food intake and vice versa, suppressing energy expenditure [ 22 ].…”

“…The hypothalamus is the key regulator of energy homeostasis, especially in fine-tuning the energy balance by delivering signals to coordinate food intake and vice versa, suppressing energy expenditure [ 22 ]. Hypothalamic neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti gene-related protein (AgRP) neurons induce appetite, whereas proopiomelanocortin (POMC) and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) neurons suppress it [ 16 , 17 , 19 21 , 23 ].

“…Machine-learning approaches have garnered significant attention in acupuncture and Chinese medicine due to their broad applications. These strategies employ various methods such as association analysis, correlation analysis, classification, and clustering to analyze extensive datasets and identify meaningful patterns and relationships (17)(18)(19)(20). In this paper, we first conducted a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of acupuncture for POI in CRC.…”
