Analysis of a Signalized Intersection with Dynamic Use of the Left-Turn Lane for Opposite through Traffic

Abstract: For signalized intersections with a quantitative imbalance between the approach and exit lanes, this study proposes a method for the dynamic use of the left-turn lane for opposite through traffic to improve the efficiency of the signalized intersection. The complete scheme of this method mainly consists of three parts: the location routes of the dynamic lane, the temporal scheme, and the spatial scheme. To demonstrate the effectiveness of this method, a simulation scheme comparing the intersection with and wit… Show more

“…A contraflow left-turn lane (CLL),one of unconventional intersections, provides additional left-turn capacity at intersections by dynamically using contraflow exit lanes [20][21][22][23]. As another unconventional intersection, the U-turn (UT) requires left turning vehicles to follow through vehicles crossing the intersection and U-turn at the downstream opening to achieve indirect left turning [24,25].…”

“…For the frst category, it was assumed that the capacity of an isolated signalized intersection was improved by phasing and timing optimization [11,[14][15][16]. In the second category, the intersection throughput was improved by changing the geometric characteristics of the left and right turns, such as right-turn channelization and increased left-or right-turn storage length [17][18][19][20]. Te current study investigates an undersaturated isolated signalized intersection considering the geometric characteristics (i.e., number of lanes) of channelized right-turn approaches and the storage length of the left-turn approach.…”

“…For instance, Arliansyah and Bawono [ 12 , 13 ] evaluated the performance of intersection junctions through measuring some important parameters such as average delay and queue length. Zheng et al [ 14 ] proposed a method for the dynamic use of the left-turn lane for opposite through traffic to improve the efficiency of the signalized intersection. Similarly, the average delay and queue length are the common measurements used to show the efficiency of the proposed method.…”
