Analysis of a mica subfabric

Abstract: SYNOPSISThe mica (muscovite, biotite, and/or phlogopite) in the Lewisian rocks near Furnace, Loch Maree, exhibits two habits, phylloblastic and decussate nematoblastic crystals, which are deduced to have grown during one period of deformation and metamorphism called main phase. All the micas, along with the associated mesoscopic fabric elements, are deformed by two subsequent periods of deformation, mid phase and late phase, during which no recrystallisation of mica occurred. These observations are supplemente… Show more

“…The sequence of events in the metasedimentarj schist regime (Table 3) shows the effects of polyphase deformation during the Laxfordian episode on sediments deposited c. 2.1 b.y. ago (Bhattacharjee 1963(Bhattacharjee , 1968Keppie 1969;Bikerman et al 1975). The dominant fold-forming phase (F3) corresponds with the dominant fold-forming phase in the gneisses with which c. 1740 m.y.…”

“…. In the southern region the dominant mica growth in schists of the Loch Maree Series took place during the Laxfordian orogeny (Keppie 1967(Keppie , 1969. In the northern region Lambert and Holland (in press) and T. D. B. Lyon (personal communication) have determined ages indicative of the Laxfordian orogeny and the regional studies of Chowdhary and Bowes (in press), Dash (1969) and D. Findlay (personal communication) suggest that the effects of this orogeny are widespread.…”
