Analysis of a combined cycle propulsion system for STRATOFLY hypersonic vehicle over an extended trajectory

Abstract: Hypersonic civil aviation is an important enabler for extremely shorter flight durations for long-haul routes and using unexploited flight altitudes. Combined cycle engine concepts providing extended flight capabilities, i.e. propelling the aircraft from take-off to hypersonic speeds, are proposed to achieve high-speed civil air transportation. STRATOFLY project is a continuation of former European efforts in hypersonic research and aims at developing a commercial reusablevehicle for cruise speed of Mach 8 at … Show more

“…A first mission analysis was carried out to identify a draft trajectory and profile (Figure 2), connecting Brussels to Sydney, as described here. During the first part of the mission, six Air Turbo Rocket (ATR) engines are used [22], with an available thrust at sea level of about 233 kN per engine. The vehicle flies at subsonic speeds during the subsonic climb.…”

“…A total time of 55 min is needed to reach the beginning of cruise conditions, while the cruise phase lasts 1 h 29 min. The highest propellant consumption rate is experienced at the beginning of the mission, while the vehicle performs the climb phases [22]. During cruise the propellant mass consumption is instead reduced.…”

“…Существует схемы ВРД, сочетающие в едином агрегате турбореактивный и прямоточный двигатель турбопрямоточные двигатели (ТПД) [1][2][3][4]. Одна из таких схем показана на рисунке 1, где представлен ТПД по схеме турбореактивного двухконтурного двигателя с форсажной камерой в наружном контуре.…”
