Analysis, evaluation and innovative methodologies to prevent coastal erosion

Abstract: The main characteristic of a coastal system is its variability. Many factors are involved in the evolution of the shoreline, which can depend on the weather, on geology, and on the presence or absence of river mouths. They can also depend on the urbanization of the coasts or of the interior areas. In order to prevent coastal erosion, it is necessary to clearly understand the interaction of so many factors. In this regard both geological and historical aspects, experimental and theoretical models have to be con… Show more

“…Coastal flooding is a danger to people who live near coasts, which currently represent about a third of the world's population [1,2]. To analyze coastal flooding, it is necessary to know the coastal dynamics and the factors that influence it, which can be mainly grouped in natural and anthropic factors [3][4][5][6]. These factors have increased the vulnerability of coastal areas to natural events [7][8][9][10][11][12].…”

“…Among natural factors, the most important are the action of wave motion [41]- [45] and interaction between longshore and river transport [46]- [50]. Therefore, an accurate knowledge of river [51], [52] and coastal morphodynamics [53], [54] and of its natural and anthropogenic causes [55]- [57] are important for river and coastal zone planning and management [58], [59].…”

“…Misdiagnosis of the factors listed above can lead to environmental disasters as in the case of Saline Joniche, near the Messina Strait [43], or in the case of Badolato, in the Calabrian Ionian coast [44]. So, for effective management of coastal areas it is of fundamental importance to know all the factors which influence the coastal dynamics [45]- [47].…”
