Analysis and synthesis of Industry 4.0 research landscape

Abstract: Purpose In recent years, Industry 4.0 has received immense attention from academic community, practitioners and the governments across nations resulting in explosive growth in the publication of articles, thereby making it imperative to reveal and discern the core research areas and research themes of Industry 4.0 extant literature. The purpose of this paper is to discuss research dynamics and to propose a taxonomy of Industry 4.0 research landscape along with future research directions. Design/methodology/a… Show more

“…The concept of Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution where the three first industrial revolutions are related to mechanical power (Industry 1.0), mass production (Industry 2.0) and the digital revolution (Industry 3.0) (Culot, Nassimbeni, Orzes, & Sartor, 2020; Wagire, Rathore, & Jain, 2019). Industry 4.0 has been defined as the integration of information and communications technologies with industrial technology (Ben‐Daya, Hassini, & Bahroun, 2019; Zhou, Liu, & Zhou, 2015).…”

“…The Industry 4.0 phenomenon at large and individual key enabling technologies have been at the center of a growing interest across managerial disciplines; detailed overviews can be found in recent literature reviews and bibliometric analyses (e.g., Strozzi et al, 2017;Gagliati and Bigliardi, 2019;Mariani and Borghi, 2019;Wagire et al, 2020;Mahlmann Kipper et al, In Press). Overall, four broad research foci are at the core of the ongoing debate: implementation process characteristics, emerging adoption patterns, possible impacts, and nontechnological features of the phenomenon.…”

“…Furthermore, productivity changes require a different skill mix, demanding essential problemsolving, critical thinking and design thinking abilities. [42] Technology-centric convergence [5,12,15,25,26, 42] Virtual model and physical environment linkage [1,7,22,25,41,50] (continued) From a technology perspective, digital eco-systems are enabled where strategy, channels, people and technology are connected within an organisation or across multiple organisations in the eco-system, emphasising security implementation concerns. As the digital technologies inform change, transformation may be based on technologycentric convergence, especially in instances where there is a blurring between virtual and physical worlds (digital twins) or where the digital world is translated to the physical one (3D printing).…”
