Analysis and Mitigation of Subsynchronous Resonance in a Korean Power Network with the First TCSC Installation

Abstract: This paper presents a detailed analysis results of the effect of a thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) on subsynchronous resonance (SSR), which was first applied to a Korean power system. First, the TCSC parameters were calculated, the structure of TCSC with synchronous voltage reversal (SVR) controller was presented, and the torsional characteristics of Hanul nuclear power generator rotor were studied to investigate the natural frequency and mode shape. The test signal method was used to determine th… Show more

“…In another practical example, SSR analysis was carried out to investigate the torsional characteristics of the Hanul nuclear power plant in Japan [34]. Increased probability of torsional interaction between the generator and a fixed series capacitor was identified, where, depending on the operating condition, f r ranged between 35 and 39 Hz.…”

“…Such techniques modulate the firing angle to introduce damping. In references [10], [11], [14], a special thyristor control technique called Synchronous Voltage Reversal (SVR) is used to control the TCSC by controlling the zero crossings of the capacitor voltage. However, in this work, the conventional direct control of the firing angles of thyristors is analysed.…”

“…Recently, energy generation with renewable energy sources has played a vital role in power systems worldwide. Wind energy-based power generation occupies a significant part in energy production next to the power generation by solar [1,2]. The wind energy generation system [WEGS] with a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has been widely utilized for power production.…”
