Analysis and design of hybrid electric regional turboprop aircraft

Abstract: The potential environmental benefits of hybrid electric regional turboprop aircraft in terms of fuel consumption are investigated. Lithium-air batteries are used as energy source in combination with conventional fuel. A validated design and analysis framework is extended with sizing and analysis modules for hybrid electric propulsion system components. In addition, a modified Bréguet range equation, suitable for hybrid electric aircraft, is introduced. The results quantify the limits in range and performance f… Show more

“…Generally, by developing the technology for electric / hybrid aircraft the design space increases dramatically [46] that requires radically new solutions like synergetic, tightly-coupled morphological and systems integration emphasizing propulsion -as exemplified by the potential afforded by distributed propulsion solutions [46 -48]. Investigation of the potential and limitations [49] introduced by electric flight concept [19,23,24,28,33,50] leads to rethinking the conventional conceptual design methodologies of aircraft. The developers may define new constraints partly subjectively.…”

“…An aircraft conceptual design by TU-Delft made for the regional segment, for 70 PAX with parallel hybrid electric configuration with a design range of 1528 km, based on Li-air batteries with a specific energy of 1000 Wh/kg, providing 34% of the shaft power throughout the mission, yields a reduction in emissions of 28% [116]. A 70-passenger aircraft design for the regional market, with a mission range of 1530 km, was assessed with different variants in propulsion system configuration: parallel, serial, and parallel/serial for the fuel/energy consumption assessment.…”

“…In [40], the authors stated, when using a constant power split for all the mission phases, the supplied power ratio has approximately the same value as for the power split.…”
