With growing traffic demands, transportation networks become more and more congested and prone to disruptions. In this paper, we study how different perturbations affect the free flow equilibria, i.e., equilibria where no congestion effects are present, in transportation networks. More specifically, if and when the equilibrium of the perturbed dynamics is still in free flow. A generalized cell transmission model models the dynamics of the transportation network, and the perturbations considered are perturbations in the exogenous inflows, flow capacity drops, and perturbations in the routing, i.e., when drivers deviate from their normal route preferences. The paper also shows that social optimum assignments in traffic networks, may not be the most robust ones.

Abstract-Given the importance of continuous traffic flow forecasting in most of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications, where every new traffic data become available in every few minutes or seconds, the main objective of this study is to perform a multi-step ahead traffic flow forecasting that can meet a trade-off between accuracy, low computational load, and limited memory capacity. To this aim, based on adaptive Kalman filtering theory, two forecasting approaches are proposed. We suggest solving a multi-step ahead prediction problem as a filtering one by considering pseudo-observations coming from the averaged historical flow or the output of other predictors in the literature. For taking into account the stochastic modeling of the process and the current measurements we resort to an adaptive scheme. The proposed forecasting methods are evaluated by using measurements of the Grenoble south ring.

Abstract-In this paper, we study the problem of optimal balancing of traffic density distributions. The optimization is carried out over the sets of equilibrium points for the Cell Transmission Traffic Model. The goal is to find the optimal balanced density distribution that maximizes the Total Travel Distance. The optimization is executed in two steps. At the first step, we consider a nonlinear problem to find a uniform density distribution that maximizes the Total Travel Distance. The second step is to solve the constrained quadratic problem to find the near balanced optimal equilibrium point. At both steps, we use decomposition methods. The quadratic optimization problem is solved by using the Dual Problem. The computational algorithms associated to such a problem are given.
