Today's network use the traditional architectural segmentation of the network types in core, access and user equipment domains, whereby the core is responsible for managing user requirements in terms of switching/routing, bandwidth/QoS reservations, authentication and accounting, and the access network infrastructure is typically limited to allowing connectivity of the user equipment to the core. Within service management admission control has been recognized as a convenient mechanism to provide high-quality communication by ensuring resources availability. It represents a meaning in fulfilling the contracted service level agreement (SLA) between the user and the network provider. This paper provides a thorough analysis on different classification approaches for admission control techniques, while identifying their characteristics, differences and analogies. Currently, there is no standardized classification of admission control in the standards bodies. It further gives a more detailed analysis on the measurement-based admission control based on performance analysis, and introduces an admission control approach based on measurements. The performance of this algorithm is illustrated through simulation results.

Resource management schemes in current data centers, including cloud environments, are not well equipped to handle the dynamic variation in traffic caused by the large diversity of traffic sources, source mobility patterns, and underlying network characteristics. Part of the problem is lacking knowledge on the traffic source behaviour and its proper representation for development and operation. Inaccurate, static traffic models lead to incorrect estimation of traffic characteristics, making resource allocation, migration, and release schemes inefficient, and limit scalability. The end result is unsatisfied customers (due to service degradation) and operators (due to costly inefficient infrastructure use). The authors argue that developing appropriate methods and tools for traffic predictability requires carefully conducted and analysed traffic experiments. This chapter presents their measurements and statistical analyses on various traffic sources for two network settings, namely local Area Network (LAN) and 3G mobile network. LAN traffic is organised in DiffServ categories supported by MPLS to ensure Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. 3G measurements are taken from a live network upon entering the IP domain. Passive monitoring was used to collect the measurements in order to be non-obtrusive for the networks. The analyses indicate that the gamma distribution has general applicability to represent various traffic sources by proper setting of the parameters. The findings allow the construction of traffic models and simulation tools to be used in the development and evaluation of flexible resource management schemes that meet the real-time needs of the users.

In the architectures of the networks, which offer Quality of Service (QoS), the setup procedure is the exchange of signaling messages to agree the codec of the multimedia applications and to reserve the resources in the network. This exchange of packets between two or more signaling entities causes that this traffic strongly depends on the network scenario and network conditions. Therefore, it is very difficult to find general signaling traffic models, which are valid for any scenario. In this paper we propose a method for validating the aggregated signaling traffic model. This validation is performed using our own developed module of the ns-2 simulator, which simulates the signaling message exchange during the connection setup in an IP based network with QoS guaranties. For this new simulation tool, we provide technical description and discuss some implementation issues under ns-2 platform. The final results of the validation process show under what traffic conditions the versatile Poisson model is valid. The drawn conclusions provide some guidelines for the usage of analytical models in the network provisioning process concerned with signaling traffic.
