Analysis and design of a continuous-wave terahertz photoconductive photomixer array source

Abstract: An array of photoconductive photomixer/antenna elements as a continuous-wave terahertz source is proposed, and its radiation characteristic is studied. Employing photomixer/antenna elements in an array configuration increases available terahertz power, while each of the array elements consumes optical power less than its maximum sustainable power. A few microwatt terahertz power is achievable from a typical array structure. It is shown that the radiated beam can be steered by changing the angle between the two… Show more

“…Recently, THz emission was demonstrated with a planar large-area PC emitter consisting of interdigitated electrode metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structures on a bulk SI GaAs wafer [69]. This device can be regarded as an array of closely spaced single PC emitters and in this terms it has been investigated theoretically for THz cw-signal generation [70]. The design proposed in Ref.…”

“…Analysis and design of photomixer array is also studied as a way to increase the THz radiation power [5]. Here we coherently synthesize two continuous microwave signals generated by two optical beats for the enhancement of the microwave power.…”

“…Often a damage threshold of 1 mW=lm 2 is given for 780-800 nm radiation. 9,21 One option to circumvent this is to increase the total power at constant intensity by moving to large area emitters, but their efficiency is much lower than that of small-area antenna coupled emitters. 6 With arrays of small emitters, a higher total power can be obtained, [21][22][23] but at present experimental investigations mostly concentrate on pulsed excitation and numerical analysis indicates a sublinear increase of total power with array size, 21 i.e., a large array does not reach the efficiency of single emitters.…”
