Analysis and Countermeasures on Seismic Damages of Gas Pipeline Network in Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract: Based on seismic damage data of gas pipeline network, obtained through scientific investigation in 18 cities/counties, seismic damage appearances of gas pipeline which are made of different materials are summarized and compared, and their impacts on gas supply function are studied. Then the use status of pipeline of different materials and the reasons of causing damages are analyzed. And some earthquake resistant countermeasures are proposed to reduce the seismic damages.

“…In 1995, during the Osaka Kobe earthquake (M = 7.3), there were more than 20,000 leaks from gas pipes in the Osaka area, and most of them occurred at the elbows of welded steel pipes. For the water supply pipes, 900,000 households were cut off from the water supply, 23 nodes, such as elbows, were damaged near the Kanzaki River, and the sewage and rainwater drainage networks in Kobe City were also severely damaged, covering an area of nearly 3m/ha [4]; In 2008, during the Wenchuan earthquake (M = 8.0), nearly 20 cities and counties in Sichuan Province alone, including the underground pipe network, suffered serious damage to the water supply and the gas supply facilities, including gas companies and water plants in Beichuan, Dujiangyan, Mianzhu and other places; although they could operate normally, the underground pipe network was seriously damaged [5,6]. The leakage at the pipe network joints and other important nodes is huge in such a scenario, which then cannot meet the requirements of use, and it is difficult to repair the damage quickly [7].…”

“…The stick-slip action of faults generally triggers strong earthquakes, which can cause large displacements to appear at the ground surface, produce strong ground motions in high seismic intensity regions, and pose severe damage to structures. The damage to pipelines in typical strong earthquakes, such as the 1975 Haicheng (Sun andHou, 1991), 1976 Tangshan (Sun and Shien, 1983), 2002 Alaska (Hall et al, 2003;Honegger et al, 2004), and 2008 Wenchuan earthquakes (Wang et al, 2012), was investigated, which presented the destruction features of structures and primary influencing factors on destructiveness. In the 1978 Miyagiken-Oki earthquake, approximately 350 cases of damage to water and gas pipelines were investigated near the cut-and-fill boundaries of newly developed residential areas (Liang and Sun, 2000).…”

“…It severely damaged the water supply network in Dujiangyan city and disconnected water to over half of the customers. More than 800 leaks in the gas supply network were identified in Mianyang city, and the gas supply pressure in the system was decreased from 0.25 to 0.1 MPa [3,4].…”
