Analysis and computerized model of the automatic hydraulic ram pump

Abstract: The operating characteristics of the hydram system were studied analytically, with some parameters being determined experimentally. The system efficiency, pumping capacity, pump power, and cycle duration were derived with a simple computerized model. Comparison of the model and experimental results gave good correlations for pump efficiency and pump capacity. Pump power and cycle duration were not predicted with high accuracy, but satisfactory trends were obtained. The computer model also indicated that high f… Show more

“…Based on the relationship between dependent and independent parameters in Eqs. (5) to (8), by performing experimental evaluation, the e ect of independent parameters on the ram pump performance was taken into account. By evaluating the ram pump performance versus the e ective parameters on its performance, characteristic curves of ram pump were presented.…”

“…They studied various impulse valves and drive pipe diameters experimentally. Schiller and Kahangire [5], by using numerical methods, concluded that the exact theories for predicting the performance of ram pumps were complex. They assumed four phases in ram pump cycle and ignored the e ect of pressure waves during acceleration due to their complexity.…”

“…The diameter of valve disc is 120 mm, and the flange thickness is 20 mm. According to equation (1) and equations (10) to (12), the valve opening should satisfy 25 mm s 37 mm. When a waste valve is tuned, other factors such as the available water discharge and durability, should also be considered.…”

“…Calvert (5, 6) studied the effect of certain dimensionless groups on ram pump behaviour and Iversen (8). Following Iversen, there was the work of Slack et al (9) and Schiller and Kahangire (10). Unfortunately, none of these studies took account of the OBrien and Gosline theory.…”
