Analysing the ability of smart meter data to provide accurate information to the UK DNOs

Abstract: By 2020, smart meters will potentially provide the UK's distribution network operators (DNOs) with more detailed information about the real-time status of the low-voltage (LV) network. However, the smart meter data that the DNOs will receive has a number of limitations including the unavailability of some real-time smart meter data, aggregation of smart meter readings to preserve customer privacy, half-hourly averaging of customer demand/ generation readings, and the inability of smart meters to identify the c… Show more

“…These series impedances are shown in Figure 5. A 4 × 4 series impedance matrix Z ij results from this model (7). The series impedance matrix is completely full for a three-phase four-wire line, with only non-null elements in one phase and neutral positions for two-phase or single-phase lines.…”

“…Below, the optimization problem detailed in Section 3 is solved for the specified load scenario and earthing configuration. The two control strategies (1P-OLTCST and 3P-OLTCST) are not only considered but also solved if the exact line model provided in [48] is assumed (7) or if there are insufficient line data and a simplified model (s.m.) is the only possibility (8).…”

“…The PV system is capable of providing reactive power using an inverter. The total apparent power that the inverter is capable to inject to the grid is defined as S inv,npv , and the generation power of the PV system (P G npv and Q G npv ) is limited by the apparent power, as seen in equation (8).…”

“…That causes the sampling period to be reduced from hours to minutes [7]. Nowadays with the help of smart meters, the ability to read loads and generation values from 1 minute to two hours allows better control over the LV distribution network [8]. In literature it is common to see analysis performed on data with 15 minute resolution [9], [10].…”
