Analyses on the pigment composition of different seed coat colors in adzuki bean

Abstract: Seed coat color is an important quality and domestication trait. The adzuki bean has more than a dozen seed coat colors closely associated with the anthocyanin and flavonoid metabolism pathways. In this study, we explored the pigment composition of 10 different seed coat color adzuki beans including red, black mottle on red, black mottle on gray, golden, green, black, ivory, brown, and light brown. The results showed that anthocyanins are the main pigment in adzuki bean seed coat. There were no carotenoid or p… Show more

“…Although adzuki beans are found in several seed coat colors, such studies are still scarce. Only recently, Zhao et al [ 45 ] evaluated the relative abundance of anthocyanins in nine Chinese adzuki beans of different seed coat colors and found a high accumulation of anthocyanins in black seed coat adzuki beans. In another aspect, Yoshida et al [ 46 ] compared the distributions and contents of anthocyanins in Japanese and Chinese adzuki beans with other legumes.…”

“…Seed maturity is a crucial factor in improving the yield of Siberian wild rye, which is important for the sustainable development of animal husbandry and the improvement of degraded grasslands ( Xie et al., 2015 ; Zhao et al., 2017 ). Delayed harvesting results in an 80% reduction in yield due to seed shattering ( You et al., 2011 ), and traditionally, seed lots were sorted into different maturity fractions based on color, moisture content, and analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence signals ( Jalink et al., 1998b ; Ellis, 2019 ; Zhao et al., 2022 ). However, with advances in spectroscopy and computational technologies, non-destructive identification of seed characteristics is now possible through X-ray analysis ( de Medeiros et al., 2020b ), multispectral and hyperspectral image analysis ( Xia et al., 2019 ), microtomography ( Gomes-Junior et al., 2019 ), magnetic resonance ( Melchinger et al., 2017 ), and other techniques.…”
