Analyses of Recent Sediment Surface Dynamic of a Namibian Kalahari Salt Pan Based on Multitemporal Landsat and Hyperspectral Hyperion Data

Abstract: This study combines spaceborne multitemporal and hyperspectral data to analyze the spatial distribution of surface evaporite minerals and changes in a semi-arid depositional environment associated with episodic flooding events, the Omongwa salt pan (Kalahari, Namibia). The dynamic of the surface crust is evaluated by a change-detection approach using the Iterative-reweighted Multivariate Alteration Detection (IR-MAD) based on the Landsat archive imagery from 1984 to 2015. The results show that the salt pan is … Show more

“…The Omongwa salt pan covers an area of 3 by 5 km, which makes it the largest in a group of regional pans that are developed in calcretes of a paleodrainage system [42][43][44]. At the Omongwa pan, seasonal to ephemeral inundation events and subsequent drying and build-up of evaporite-rich sediments have been observed [44][45][46]. The mean annual rainfall of this area is 200-250 mm recorded for the period of 1982-2002 with high monthly, seasonal, and interannual variations and a mean annual temperature of about 21°C.…”

“…The surrounding Kalahari landscape is characterized by an undulating linear dune system typically in a NW-SE direction (as shaped by the prevailing winds) with elevation magnitudes of ~1-3 m between dune crest and interdune valley. South of the pan, a lunette dune rises up to ~50 m above the pan floor level [45].…”

“…Further capabilities to map iron were opened with the launch of the Sentinel-2 satellites [73], since the multispectral instrument (MSI) covers important iron absorption features [74]. Another example for the use of Hyperion data is the detection and quantification of different salt types that is combined with the detection of stable and dynamic areas at the surface of a Namibian salt pan on the basis of a 30-year-long Landsat time series [75]. The combination of multispectral time-series for monitoring dynamic processes with hyperspectral observations for soil and sediment characterization enabled the extraction of new knowledge on the salt pan crust development.…”

“…However, in Omongwa pan no distinct evaporitic layers could be identified and evaporite crystals are dispersed in the deposits. According to Milewski et al (2017) the main mineralogy components of the top layer at our study site are halite (NaCl, 94%) and gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O, 3%). In semiarid to arid regions, for one thing, water will evaporate quickly before it can infiltrate.…”

“…In dry months the capillary evaporation of shallow groundwater will accumulate salts near the surface (Smith & Compton, 2004). The surface samples were slightly alkaline with a pH value of~8 (Milewski et al, 2017).…”
