This study evaluates the trace metal composition and fractionation in sludge samples from anaerobic sewage treatment plants from six cities in Brazil. Ten metals were evaluated: Ni, Mn, Se, Co, Fe, Zn, K, Cu, Pb and Cr. Specific methanogenic activity of the sludge was also evaluated using acetic acid as the substrate. Among the essential trace metals for anaerobic digestion, Se, Zn, Ni and Fe were found at a high percentage in the organic matter/sulfide fraction in all sludge samples analyzed. These metals are less available for microorganisms than other metals, i.e., Co and K, which were present in significant amounts in the exchangeable and carbonate fractions. Cu is not typically reported as an essential metal but as a possible inhibitor. One of the samples showed a total Cu concentration close to the maximal amount allowed for reuse as fertilizer. Among the non-essential trace metals, Pb was present in all sludge samples at similar low concentrations and was primarily present in the residual fraction, demonstrating very low availability. Cr was found at low concentrations in all sludge samples, except for the sludge from STP5; interestingly, this sludge presented the lowest specific methanogenic activity, indicating possible Cr toxicity.

A presença de elevadas concentrações de Cu e Zn no lodo de esgoto pode limitar a sua utilização agrícola como fertilizante orgânico. Portanto, objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar a produção de biomassa e fitoextração de Cu e Zn pelo capim-elefante cultivado em lodo de esgoto puro. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, no delineamento blocos casualizados. Os tratamentos corresponderam a cinco períodos de cultivo do capim-elefante em parcelas de lodo de esgoto puro (30, 60, 90, 120 e 150 dias), com cinco repetições. O capim-elefante demonstrou alta capacidade de desenvolvimento no lodo de esgoto puro, apesar das condições adversas enfrentadas, como aquecimento do resíduo e concentração elevada de Zn. No período de 120 dias, o capim-elefante cultivado em lodo de esgoto produziu 33,6 t há-1 de massa seca de parte aérea. O aumento do tempo de cultivo proporcionou acréscimos na extração de Cu e Zn pela planta. No entanto, o capim-elefante apresentou uma baixa capacidade de fitoextração de Cu e Zn no lodo de esgoto, mesmo com cultivos mais longos.

In this study, Cu and Zn concentrations were monitored for 12 months in sewage sludge from the Malatya Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant (MABWTP). The obtained data were evaluated both monthly and seasonally and compared with the standard values given in the Regulation on the Use of Domestic and Urban Sewage Sludge in Soil. The highest Cu and Zn concentrations in sewage sludge from the MABWTP were 181.74±9.0 mg kg -1 and 653.8±32.6 mg kg -1 in September and the lowest Cu and Zn concentrations were 103.69±5.18 mg kg -1 and 436.2±21.8 mg kg -1 in December and March. The highest concentrations of Cu and Zn in the sewage sludge from MABWTP were found to be 167.21±8.3 mg kg -1 and 611.80±30.5 mg kg -1 in the summer and autumn, and the lowest Cu and Zn concentrations were 109.39±5.4 mg kg -1 and 440.13±22 mg kg -1 in the winter season. When the concentrations of Cu and Zn in the MABWTP treatment sludge were examined, it was found that they were lower than the limit values given in the regulation. As a result, it was determined that sewage sludge taken from MABWTP could be used for soil in terms of Cu and Zn concentrations.
