Even though only fig mosaic virus (FMV) has been shown to cause FMD, many other viruses have been identified in diseased fig trees. In 2021, total RNA was extracted from fig leaf samples displaying symptoms of mosaic and chlorotic mottling and was subjected to high-throughput sequencing (HTS) to construct the first virome profile of a South African fig tree.
